Developing sustainable supply solutions
Donations of food do not always meet demand – in particular there is a significant gap between the amount of staple foods rescued and what is needed by the charities and community groups to provide filling and nutritious meals.
As a member of the Foodbank Australia family our reach extends to almost 50 national donors, many of whom provide ongoing support of key staple food items and logistic solutions. Through Foodbank Australia, we have access to the successful Key Staples Program.
This brings true partnership innovation to the sector by encouraging Australia’s leading food manufacturers to donate or subsidise the ingredients and services required to produce, process, manufacture, pack and transport food items specifically for Foodbank. The resulting products include breakfast cereal, pasta and sauce and tinned fruit and vegetables.
The Key Staples initiative goes far to secure an ongoing supply of essential food products to help us provide nutritious, well balanced meals to Victorians experiencing crisis.
To achieve our target of 50 million kilograms of food, Foodbank is keen to work with more of our donors to create innovative programs to supply key staple products on a sustainable basis.
Key Staples Collaboration Partners
Each year Foodbank Australia need 2,000 tonnes of grain for its Key Staples Program. The grain is donated by growers and traders, this grain is then consolidated by our grain trade partners and we then work with our manufacturing partners to produce cereal and pasta. Uncle Tobys and Sanitarium use this grain to help produce over 4 million serves of cereal each year. In addition to this, Uncle Toby’s and its suppliers also donate a full day’s worth of production at its factory. In turn, this produces over 1 million serves of oats each year, which has been essential in the supply of key breakfast staples to Foodbank warehouses across Australia.
Our meat partners provide a regular source of much needed protein for those accessing food relief through our registered welfare agencies. This year we are excited to welcome Thomas Foods and Fletchers International to the Meat Program, between them they will donate approximately 30 tonnes of lamb trim.
Sunrice and its growers donate 100 tonnes of rice each year to Foodbank, which is then distributed to charities nationally.
The collaboration between the 4 major fresh milk providers, Lion, Paramalat, Fonterra and Murray Goulburn donate over 900,000 litres of fresh milk each year, providing a much needed source of calcium to people in need. Murray Goulburn also manufactures 700,000 litres of Devondale long life milk, a much in demand product by our agencies. The Flight Centre Foundation is the major supporter of the program. This collaborative supply is completed with Tetra Pak who donate the packaging and Toll Logistics who provide the logistics and transport to ensure the milk reaches the Foodbank distribution centres.
Simplot works with its manufacturing partners to provide 2-3 full days of production each year, providing approximately 400 tonnes of Pasta Sauce to supplement our Pasta Program.
Foodbank provides around 280 tonnes of pasta each year to meet the demand of its registered welfare agencies and their food relief recipients. Grain donated from the Foodbank Grain Program is milled by our flour partners, with Manildra and MAURI anz also supporting the Program with a further donation of over 500 tonnes of flour each year. Perfection Packaging and Shorko provide packaging and Visy supports with cartons. Rinoldi pasta manages the entire production process resulting in the regular supply of 22 tonnes of pasta per month.
SPC is one of the original supporters of the Foodbank Key Staples program and continues with strong support of the initiative providing over 295 tonnes of canned fruit to the program to date.
