Reaching the Community

Without the work of Foodbank Victoria and the front line work of over 900 community partners, each month, over 100,000 Victorians would not receive the emergency food relief assistance they require. The services Foodbank Victoria and our community partners play a crucial role in addressing a longer-term solution around the issue of food insecurity.

As the demand in Victoria continues to rise, we need more resources to support those in need. 66% of our community partners rely on volunteers to perform critical tasks. Insufficient food and funding pose major capacity issues across the welfare sector.

Compounding the problem further is the limited infrastructure in place in the community to store and distribute the food we are able to provide. The challenge to provide food relief on top of providing core services distracts the welfare sector from addressing the issues people in crisis present to their front-line workers.

By approaching the way we distribute food to the community creatively, we are developing new ways of broadening our reach of emergency food relief across Victoria.

Farms to Families®

An initiative developed to ensure that community need is met, irrespective of the identified weaknesses in the distribution chain is the new Farms to Families® program. This initiative has been created to deliver fresh produce and refrigerated products directly to people living in high and medium density public housing communities. As a result of this initiative, Foodbank is able to bypass the storage capacity bottleneck that exists and get food to people in need.

Community FoodShare

In regional Victoria, the Foodbank Victoria Community FoodShares are enhancing our distribution and reach, whilst alleviating strain on local service providers. Our Community FoodShares bring to life Foodbank Victoria’s goal of providing all Victorians the opportunity to access high quality, nutritious food whilst improving distribution networks. By providing a centralised food hub, the intention of the program is to create the infrastructure to enable local food security initiatives to flourish under the guidance and expertise of Foodbank Victoria.
